Great Fitness Books That Will Make You Want to Sweat

Take it from the team at Viewheel; these are the best fitness books read and reviewed, guaranteed to make you want to sweat!

Unbreakable Runner: Unleash the Power of Strength & Conditioning for a Lifetime of Running Strong

Could you run a faster marathon — by training less? That’s the premise behind this book, co-written by CrossFit Endurance™ founder Brian MacKenzie and T.J. Murphy, the former editor-in-chief of Triathlete magazine. Murphy, a runner who previously swore by logging tons of miles, and MacKenzie, explore the benefits of becoming a faster, stronger and healthier runner by strength training more. Though some have labelled CFE controversial, this book might just convince you to give it a try (Murphy was a former skeptic, now converted). You’ll find illustrated demos of how to do various drills involving CrossFit staples like hollow rocks or double-unders and training plans for everything from a 5K to an ultramarathon.

Off Course: Inside the Mad, Muddy World of Obstacle Course Racing

The opening line introduces readers to author Erin Beresini — as she lies facedown in the mud. Over the next 239 pages, you’ll join Beresini in the trenches as she trains for an endurance athlete’s worst (or best?) nightmare: The Spartan Ultra Beast Race. The 26.2-mile obstacle course designed by Royal Marines is replete with physical and mental hurdles (think: being forced to choose between solving a Rubix cube or hitting a target with a spear before you’re allowed to cross the finish line).

Beresini, an ultrarunner and IronWoman, immerses herself in the wacky world of extreme obstacle racing, exploring the history of the events in the U.S., as she trains to reach her most challenging goal yet. The writer’s witty, self-deprecating tone and the do-or-die subculture of mud racing will have readers hooked from the start.

The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distance

You’re not alone in your love-hate relationship with logging miles. Perfect for an aspiring marathoner who simply lacks motivation, this book uses pithy cartoons to explain how and why author Matthew Inman is hopelessly hooked on running. The writer behind the hilarious blog The Oatmeal, Inman is a self-described former “fat kid.” His primary incentive to run: Escaping the Blerch, aka “the fat little cherub who follows me when I run,” he says. “The Blerch represents all forms of gluttony, apathy and indifference that plague my life,” Inman writes. Follow along as Inman illustrates the dos and don’ts of running a marathon, fighting inner laziness, and avoiding a diet composed entirely of bacon, bear claws and cheese. Prepare to laugh out loud and get motivated to sign up for your next race by the end.

Staying Fit Through Everyday “Micro-Workouts”

The pandemic seems to have shut down much of life as we know it, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your days got any less busy. Add to that the fact that many gyms and fitness centers are closed, and it’s looking mighty difficult to get in a good workout these days. But you don’t need a long and grueling workout to stay fit, you can get great results by throwing in a few “micro-workouts” into your day. Here are a few micro-workout suggestions, courtesy of the team here at Viewheel.

Drop and do some push-ups. No exercise equipment around? No problem! You can drop and do some push-ups just about anywhere, and just about anytime. It may be slow going at first, and you can make it easier by dropping to your knees at first, but you’ll build up some strength and endurance before you know it!

Climb the stairs. If you’ve got some stairs at home, go ahead and climb them a few extra times during the day. Don’t have stairs at home? A public building or monument can do the trick, so long as you stay an appropriate distance from those around you and are masked up where required.

Run around the block. No, we’re not kidding here. What may have once been suggested dismissively is actually a great workout. If at all possible, get outside and take a run around the block a few times a day to help get the exercise you need.

Staying Fit Over The Holidays

Between Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years, there’s no shortage of opportunities to indulge in some festive eating, even if the holidays will look a little different this year. But you work hard to stay fit, far be it for the holidays to ruin that! So the team here at Viewheels dug into our impressive collection of content to bring you a few tips to help you stay fit over the holiday.

Measured out your portions. We get it, one look at that delicious turkey or juicy ham and you’re already thinking about second helpings. But the easiest way to avoid the holiday pounds is to avoid overeating, so make sure your portions are sensibly measured before digging right in. Stay away from seconds if you can, but if the food’s too tasty to pass up, ensure those seconds are no more than half the size.

Eat slowly and drink water. Your brain takes time to process the fact that you've eaten, and in that time there’s a risk of eating more than your stomach can handle! Taking your time to eat slowly not only leaves room for dinner table conversation, it also gives your brain the time to catch up and let you know when you've had enough. Drinking plenty of water will not only help you feel full faster, it’ll also help digest once you’re done.

Walk it off. Verdauungsspaziergang, as the Germans call it, roughly translated to “an after-dinner walk,” will go a long way towards helping your digestive system tackle all the calories it just took on. The physical activity is something your body needs anyway, so it’s a win-win!

Effective Ways to Include Exercise in Your Routine

Life can get busy sometimes, and in the daily rush from home to work and back home again, with whatever errands need to get done in between, exercise is often an afterthought. We know how important exercise is to a healthy lifestyle, so rather than sacrifice it, why not find a way to work it in? Here are three tips to help you include some exercise into your daily routine.

Walk whenever possible. If it doesn’t seem like high intensity exercise, that’s because it’s not, but a good amount of walking is still of immense importance. If your daily commute or regular errands can allow for a bit of walking instead of driving or public transit, the calories burned and muscles moved will go a long way to better overall health.

Sneak it in when you can. Have 10 minutes to kill? Home earlier than expected? Anything is better than nothing, and a workout doesn’t have to be an hour long in order to be helpful. Consider some push-ups when time permits, or a few crunches if you can. Micro-workouts, if done consistently, can provide an immense amount of benefit.

Make it count. When your schedule does permit for a block of time devoted entirely to exercise, make sure that exercise is the most effective it can be. 20 minutes of cardio or a little bit of weight training are only parts of the puzzle. Swimming, on the other hand, is a total body workout and a great cardiovascular workout as well.

How to Add More Exercise to Your Daily Life

Unless you’re a professional athlete or you’re in the gym on a near-daily basis, odds are that even if you’re active you could always benefit from more exercise in your daily life. Here are two easy ways to do it!

Share the screen time. It’s tough to resist temptation when the latest season of your favorite shows start. We get it, we’re in the same boat. That said, if you’re going to be putting in the screen time anyway, there are ways to combine it with exercise that are far better than just snacking on the couch. If you have the money and the space, an exercise bike, elliptical trainer, or treadmill will help you burn calories as you watch your favorite shows. Don’t worry, though, big machines aren’t an absolute necessity and there are plenty of ways to burn calories while you watch with free weight and body weight exercises.

Walk/cycle to work. Leaving the car at home is a great way to add more exercise to your everyday life. Cycling to work is a fantastic way to up your physical fitness, and if you’re not quite there yet walking to work will go a long way as well. If you live to far away to walk or cycle, there’s always a compromise. You can either drive part way or take public transit to a point then walk or cycle the rest of the way, steadily increasing that distance as you feel more and more capable of doing so.

Why It’s Important to Exercise While on Vacation

We all need a bit of a break every once in a while, and a vacation can be just what the doctor ordered to relax and recharge! But before taking a break from your workout routine as well, consider these three reasons to exercise while on vacation.

More energy to explore. It may be tempting to think that exercise will leave us too tired to go off and explore, but getting in a quick workout before a day of discovery is a great way to regulate energy levels and insure there’s plenty of gas in the tank to go out and explore.

Easier recovery when you get home. Sticking to your workout routine and exercising while away is a great way to ensure a quicker recovery when you get home. Getting back into your routine will be nowhere near as difficult, and regular exercise will even help combat jet lag after a long and difficult flight.

Some justification to the extra indulgence. Let’s be honest, it’ll be hard to resist temptation when surrounded by a whole new world of fabulous flavors and tasty treats. Exercising regularly while away will help burn of some of those excess calories that are bound to be consumed, and may even ease the guilt of the occasional night of overeating.

Accessible Exercise

It’s not always easy to devote two hours out of your day to exercise at the gym. In fact, for some people, it’s absolutely impossible due to schedule restrictions of even the lack of access to a gym. Exercise remains an essential part of staying fit and healthy in the long term, but for many, the concept of exercising equates to those hour-long sessions in rooms full of weights and machines. It need not be the case. Here are three ways to make exercise more accessible when a long session at the gym may not be an option.

Exercise at home. There’s a number of basic bodyweight exercises that coupled with cardiovascular activity like running and cycling can deliver a full body workout. For those looking for a bit more, fitness products like elastics are often an inexpensive means of adding more variety to home-based workouts.

Keep it short and simple. Time is a big barrier to exercise for many people, but a workout doesn’t need to belong in order to be effective. Shorter sessions can be worked in throughout the day, and when it comes down to it, anything is better than nothing.

Plan, schedule, and prioritize. Ultimately, be it at home or at the gym, if a workout isn’t planned, scheduled, and prioritized, it’s a whole lot easier to skip. Fitness is about lifestyle changes with short terms goals along the way, and the right approach to exercise is the first step in ensuring success.

The Multifaceted Approach to Weight Management

With the new year just around the corner there will be resolutions aplenty on their way. Some will resolve to lose weight or to take better care of themselves, to go on a diet or to exercise more, but the fact of the matter is that if your ultimate goal is to lose weight or maintain a healthy body weight, diet or exercise alone may not be enough. A comprehensive multifaceted approach to weight management is the best bet to maintaining a healthy body weight, and here’s why.

Diets alone don’t work. Studies have proven time and time again that any results obtained from restrictive dieting are temporary at best. More often than not calorie restrictive diets trigger an overcompensation reaction in the body, and those cravings will be stronger than ever, potentially leading to binges that will result in more weight gained than was shed due to the diet.

Jumping right into exercise can be dangerous. After long periods of inactivity, starting a high intensity workout regime can lead to injury or at the very least exhaustion, which will likely lead to abandonment of the regime.

The solution? A multifaceted approach. Consider long term diet and lifestyle changes instead of a temporary restriction. Smaller meals more often and healthier eating will have better long term results than merely cutting out certain foods or restricting calories. Do this alongside an exercise program that starts out slow and only increases in duration or intensity when you’re ready.
